Five Senses Atlas

Touch and sight carry 88.8% of all sensory language. Scent is the clearest white space: it appears in only 9.2% of entries, and much of that language stops at “smells good” or “smells bad.”

Objective & Method

Question: Which senses do bloggers actually use when they describe oil-control shampoo, and which ones barely appear?

Data: 402 sensory entries extracted from 14 blogger posts (134 products) across 8 timeline stages (texture_pre → application → rinse → immediate → next_day → extended → scent_retention → scent_on_head).

Method: Each entry was tagged by the sensory channel doing the main work:

  • Tactile — texture, friction, weight, foam feel, scalp feel, hair-strand feel
  • Visual — volume, flatness, shine, oil sheen, hair movement
  • Olfactory — scent during wash, scent retention, scent absence, scent descriptors
  • Thermal — cooling, warming, menthol/mint sensation
  • Auditory — foam sounds, hair squeaking, packaging interaction sounds

Note: Multi-sensory entries (e.g., "蓬松" = visible volume + touchable lightness) are tagged by the dominant receptor. 42 entries were reclassified after the first audit.

Touch and sight carry 88.8% of the category language

Bloggers describe shampoo through how hair feels (smooth, rough, dry, light) and how it looks (flat, fluffy, oily sheen). Scent, temperature, and sound share the remaining 11.2%.

Scent is a clear white space: 37 entries, mostly binary

Olfactory language appears in 37 entries (9.2%). Most of it stops at "smells good" or "smells bad." PDP can help by naming the scent profile in language bloggers can reuse.

Temperature is ingredient-specific. Sound is almost absent.

Thermal appears 7 times, all as menthol cooling during application. Auditory appears once. Cooling belongs to menthol products; sound does not yet carry shampoo meaning.

Channel Exemplars

TACTILE 触觉 242 entries (60.2%) — Friction, weight, foam density, scalp-feel, strand-feel

Positive touch signals

"Incredibly smooth, incredibly silky"
Stage: immediate · Classic positive tactile: post-wash strand feel
"Foam is extremely dense and fine-textured"
Stage: application · Foam density felt in hands and on scalp
"For dry hair types, scalp feels very clean after washing, but no over-stripping — comfortable"
Stage: immediate · Scalp-feel balance: clean without tightness

Negative touch signals

"Ends are dry like dead straw"
Stage: immediate · Extreme dryness metaphor — total moisture loss
"Lathering up, my hair already felt dead-dry"
Stage: application · Dryness onset during wash, not just after
"Dry, rough, and not fluffy at all"
Stage: immediate · Triple-negative tactile: the worst outcome

Boundary-drawing (the "not X but Y" pattern)

"Not that fake-slippery feel — your hair just genuinely feels smooth"
Stage: immediate · Negation defines the category: "假滑" (silicone slip) vs. real smoothness
"It's not the kind where oil control means your whole scalp shrinks tight after washing"
Stage: immediate · Boundary: oil control ≠ over-stripping
VISUAL 视觉 115 entries (28.6%) — Volume, flatness, oil sheen, shine, hair movement

Volume & lift

"Roots shot straight up — standing at military attention"
Stage: immediate · Maximum volume, personified as disciplined posture
"Puffed up like a dandelion"
Stage: extended · Over-volume: fluffy crossed into frizzy territory
"Every single time, you're amazed by the fluffiness after washing"
Stage: immediate · Visual impact strong enough to trigger emotion each time

Oil return & flatness

"Bangs turned straight into a barcode"
Stage: next_day · Oil clumps bangs into parallel lines
"Woke up and it reverted completely — oily, flat, limp. Might as well not have washed"
Stage: next_day · Total visual collapse overnight
"After rinsing, my hair was so stiff it could stand upside-down"
Stage: immediate · Over-stripping result: extreme stiffness as visual absurdity
OLFACTORY 嗅觉 37 entries (9.2%) — Scent during wash, retention, descriptors, absence

Descriptive scent (rare & valuable)

"A light citrus scent — very fresh"
Stage: scent_retention · One of few entries with actual scent descriptor
"The fragrance is soft — not bright and flashy, but a gentle, cottony floral sweetness"
Stage: scent_retention · Rare: negation-defined scent profile with texture vocabulary
"A fresh herbal-woody scent"
Stage: scent_on_head · Post-dry scent note on hair

Negative scent & scent absence

"Open it and an extremely pungent chemical-reagent smell assaults your nostrils"
Stage: application · Violent olfactory metaphor: smell as physical attack
"No scent at all — not a trace, not while washing, not while blow-drying"
Stage: application · Complete scent absence across multiple stages
"I could smell the oily-scalp smell on my own head"
Stage: scent_on_head · Shampoo scent replaced by body odor = efficacy failure through nose
Most scent entries judge, but do not describe

Of 37 olfactory entries, roughly half only say "smells good" or "smells bad." Bloggers can describe touch in many ways, but scent has a thin vocabulary. PDP that names the scent profile gives them words they currently lack.

THERMAL 温度 7 entries (1.7%) — Menthol cooling, scalp temperature sensation
"Scalp gets just a tiny bit of a cooling sensation"
Stage: application · Double-diminutive ("一点点微微") precisely bounds the cooling level
"Foam accidentally dripped on my face and body — unbearably cold, like applying Tiger Balm oil. Scary."
Stage: application · Cooling crossed comfort boundary — menthol as threat, not reward
"Scalp feels chilly and breezy"
Stage: application · Post-wash scalp temperature awareness

All 7 thermal entries occur at the application stage and involve menthol/cooling ingredients. Thermal is not a general category feature; it appears when the formula gives bloggers a cooling cue.

AUDITORY 听觉 1 entry (0.2%) — Packaging interaction sound
"Top has a magnetic-closure scoop — open it and scoop"
Stage: application · The magnetic click of opening is the only sound in 402 entries

Auditory is effectively absent. Liquid shampoo gives bloggers no distinctive sound cue to work with.

Key Takeaway

The category speaks in touch, sees in volume, and barely smells.

Tactile and visual cues account for 88.8% of all sensory descriptions. Olfactory captures only 9.2%, and most of that is binary. PDP that names scent and clarifies the cooling profile of a hero ingredient gives bloggers language they currently do not have.
